COVID-19

It goes without saying, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a heavy effect on rail ridership. But, the fluctuating stages of the pandemic have shown that passengers are willing to return, when they can.

Train services may need to adapt to a more flexible model to respond to COVID-19 in the future. New variants may bring temporary reductions in service, as the Omicron variant did in January 2022. In the meantime, the pandemic has forced governments to assess and plan for the future needs of the country, creating a fertile political and economic environment for the backing of public infrastructure.
