Metrolinx is currently undertaking the GO Expansion project, which is a major campaign to increase and improve GO services for the growing GTHA. This campaign includes the electrification of several GO rail lines. These faster lines will provide all-day, two-way service, “as quickly as every 15 minutes.” Electrified trains are faster and quieter compared to diesel engines, and greatly reduce environmental impact. But that’s not all - electrified trains will also be 50% cheaper to run per train kilometer.
The GO Expansion project looks ahead well into the century. In 25 years, today's 1,500 weekly trips on the GO Transit system will have grown to 6,000. Ongoing expansions are aiming to link more cities into GO’s network. These new projects, while having the potential to serve more rural communities and boost local and regional economies, are still met with familiar competition from cars as a desired mode of transportation.
