Vacations, shopping trips, events, and visiting family and friends are why passengers often take the train. A Metrolinx survey collecting information from riders throughout the pandemic determined that these kinds of pleasure trips will be the most common use of GO Trains moving forward.
Passengers from our survey seemed to agree:
"My most memorable trip would be my first [time] going to Hamilton by train. I was with a friend and we were off to explore the local museums…it was a fantastic way to explore the city…”
-Alexandra, Eastern Ontario
These non-commuter trips and the exploration of Ontario will be an important influence on upcoming railway projects. A report by the Toronto Region Board of Trade from March 2021 argues that the 450 kilometers of track surrounding Toronto should be used for both commuters and frequent and convenient trips for a little R&R.
