The railway was vital in the settlement of Ontario and it continues to be a critical piece of infrastructure, moving modern Canadians in record numbers. In dense urban areas like the GTA, trains are a critical people mover during rush hours. In more rural areas and between cities, trains connect these hubs and allow passengers to explore the country.
But who benefits from these services? For those within easy reach of them, the railway can be a lifeline. However, for underserved communities, the lack of services reinforces their isolation and reliance on automobiles. Many of our survey respondents have expressed a desire to see the routes to the North restored, for business and pleasure alike:
“We used to use the Northlander to visit friends in Muskoka and the North every summer, until it was summarily cancelled. This service, as well as rail service to Stratford during festival season should be restored ASAP.”
